New Year 2023 Deep Sky Album

I've tried a series of machine learning based image processing tools this past year with great success. First general photo tools from Topaz Labs and lately tools specifically trained for astronomical images from Russel Coreman: StarXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator, and BlurXTerminator. These will be part of my processing workflow going forward.

Thee following deep sky images were taken in Texas and Arizona with a RedCat 250/51mm Petzval refractor, a cooled ZWO ASI533 MC Pro one shot color camera, and a Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ 5 Pro or Vixen Polarie mount. The narrow band images were taken with an Optolong L-eNhance dual NB filter in Halpha and Oxygen iii bands.

Arizona Andromeda
M31 under the dark skies of the Coconino Plateau in northern Arizona. Seventy minutes of 30" exposures of Andromeda on 2020-09-14. William Optics RedCat 250/51mm Petzval refractor and ZWO ASI533MC cooled astrophotography camera. Controlled by a ZWO ASIAir Pro. All on a single axis Vixen Polarie mount. Reprocessed 12/2022 with the BlurXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator, and StarXTerminator plugins in Pixinsight with drizzle stacking and final exposure adjustment in Photoshop.

Rosette Nebula from Terlingua
The Rosette Nebula captured from Willow House in Terlingua on the evening of 2021-03-27. A William Optics RedCat 250/51mm telescope, Optolong L-eNhance dual NB filter, ZWO ASI533MC one shot color camera cooled to -10C, on a Sky-Watcher AZ EQ5 mount, all controlled by a ZWO ASIAIR astro controller. The L-enhance captures both Ha red and Oiii bluegreen bands. 57 3 minnute subs, drizzle stacked and processed in PixInsight with the BlurXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator, and StarXTerminator plugins in Pixinsight and final exposure adjustment in Photoshop.

Markarian's Chain
Markarian's Chain is a string of galaxies from the Virgo cluster, the most prominent are M84 and M86. Taken in Fort Davis during the Texas Star Party. Imaged starting 2022-04-29 04:00 UT. I stacked and processed 60 three minute exposoures taken with a William Optics RedCat 250/51mm telescope, Baader UV/IR cut filter, ZWO ASI 533 MC camera, and SkyWatcher AZ-EQ5 mount, ASI EAF and guide camera. All were controlled with a ZWO ASIAir Plus Controller. Drizzle stacked and processed with the BlurXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator, and StarXTerminator plugins in Pixinsight and final exposure adjustment in Photoshop.

Horsehead & Flame Nebulae
The Horsehead and Flame Nebulas in Orion from my driveway with a last quarter moon under Bortle 6+ skies. William Optics Redcat 250/51 mm telescope Optolong L-Pro broadband light pollution reduction filter, ZWO ASI 533 MC Pro at -10C, gain 1.01, 112 minutes of exposure in 60” subs. Camera control and polar alignment with a ZWO ASIAIR and iPad. Vixen Polarie single axis unguided mount on a vintage Sanford & Davis tripod. Drizzle stacked and processed with BlurXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator, and StarXTerminator plugins in Pixinsight. Final crop and exposure adjustment in Photoshop.

Bode (M81) & Cigar (M82) Nebulae
Taken 2022-04-27 04:06 UT from Fort Davis, Texas, with a William Optics RedCat 250/51mm telescope, Baader UV/IR cut filter, ZWO ASI 533 MC camera, and SkyWatcher AZ-EQ5 mount, ASI EAF and guide camera. All were controlled with a ZWO ASIAir Plus Controller. Drizzle stacked and processed with BlurXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator, and StarXTerminator plugins in Pixinsight. Final crop and exposure adjustment in Photoshop.

Lagoon & Trifid Nebulae
The Trifid, Lagoon, and dimmer but lovely IC 4685, are a highlight of southern summer skies. This image is from from the Texas Star Party in Fort Davis. Imaged starting 2022-04-30 08:31 UT. I stacked and processed 15 five minute expsoures taken with a William Optics RedCat 250/51mm telescope, Baader UV/IR cut filter, ZWO ASI 533 MC camera, and SkyWatcher AZ-EQ5 mount, ASI EAF and guide camera. All were controlled with a ZWO ASIAir Plus Controller. I've rerendered as a drizzle stack in PixInsight with the the BlurXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator, and StarXTerminator plugins in Pixinsight and final exposure adjustment in Photoshop.

Leo Triplet
The Leo Triplet, M65, M66, and edge on NGC 36728. The Triplet is a highlight of late spring skies. This image was taken starting 2022-04-26 03:14 UT with 96 minutes of total exposure with an f/5 250/51mm William Optics RedCat telescope, Baader UV/IR cut filter, and ZWO ASI 533 MC camera. Drizzle stacked and processed with BlurXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator, and StarXTerminator plugins in Pixinsight. Final crop and exposure adjustment in Photoshop.

M42 Great Nebula in Orion
Late season image of the sword of Orion shot from Fort Davis during TSP 2022. Total exposure 41 minutes, 12 at 3 min, and 60 at 5 sec. Shot just after local twilight on 2022-04-24 and 2022-04-26 with M42 only 15 deg above the horizon at nautical dusk. Even with clouds and dust, dark skies to the horizon make astrophotography a pleasure. Shot with a WO RedCat 250/51 mm, ZWO ASI533 MC, ASIAIR Plus, on a SW AZ-EQ5 mount. Drizzle processed with BlurXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator, and StarXTerminator plugins in Pixinsight. Final crop and exposure adjustment in Photoshop.

Sombrero Galaxy M104
The Sombrero Galaxy is a spiral galaxy in Virgo viewed almost edge on. It features a prominent dust lane and halo of stars suggestive of its namesake. It's only 9x4 arc minutes in apparent size, so it is a bit of a stretch for my focal length of 250 mm. Transparency was poor Friday night with high thin clouds and dust in Fort Davis. Imaging time was limited to just over two hours, 25 five minute exposures starting 2022-04-30 05:48 UT. Imaged with a William Optics RedCat 250/51mm telescope, Baader UV/IR cut filter, ZWO ASI 533 MC camera, and SkyWatcher AZ-EQ5 mount, ASI EAF and guide camera. All were controlled with a ZWO ASIAir Plus Controller. Processed with BlurXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator, and StarXTerminator plugins in Pixinsight. Final crop and exposure adjustment in Photoshop.

Pinwheel Galaxy M101
The Pinwheel Galaxy, M101, from Bad Wolf Ranch, Lampasas County, Texas at 2021-03-20 00:47 UT. 46 x 3' subs for 2 hours 18 min total exposure with a 51mm f/4.9 refractor, at unity gain. William Optics RecCat 51, Baader UV/IR filter, ZWO ASI 533 MC Pro one shot color camera. Sky-Watcher AZ EQ5 Pro mount with ZWO ASIAIR imaging computer, and iPad for scope and camera control. Processed with BlurXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator, and StarXTerminator plugins in Pixinsight. Fnal crop and exposure adjustment in Photoshop.
