Cloudy Moon

Sometimes cloudy skies bring new opportunities. This HDR composite image of the waxing gibbous Moon was shot from my front walkway in Austin on 2020-01-07 01:28 UT. The Moon was surrounded by a bright ring. The clouds racing by gave me lots of choices for a dramatic composition. I'm pleased that this image was chosen for the BBC Sky at Night January 2020 gallery.

Sony a7 iii with a WO RedCat 250/51 mm, f/4.9 telescope on a fixed tripod. Cloud image exposed 1/25 sec, ISO 3200. Moon exposed through the clouds at 1/1600 at ISO 3200 with 16 images stacked in Lynkeos. Final HDR composite and crop in Photoshop.
