Mason county has dark hill country skies. The town Pontotoc off Texas 71 in the northeast corner of the county was left nearly a ghost town after a catastrophic fire in 1947. It is a 
 scenic spot for nightscape images especially around the former San Fernando Academy. Most of the town is private property so be respectful and ask permission when off the public rights of way.

The private members only Stellar Skies dark sky community is located just to the north.
