A quick drive up US 183 to Lampassas area from Austin can often get you out from under a coastal cloud cover when winds are blowing from the SE off the Gulf. Just before Lomita, on the west side of 183 is the hill top Church of the Hills with great views from its parking lot. Near by Colorado Bend State Park and a bit closer in north of Texas 29, the private Bad Wolf site used by Austin Astronomical Society all provide dark observing locations. The usual cautions apply, be nice, scout ahead, and ask for permission.
